Cllr Christine Mitchell
District Council candidate for Cannock East & County Council candidate for Chadsmoor
“I have represented the people of Cannock East on the District Council for 25 years and hope to bring this experience to enable me to provide a voice for Chadsmoor on the County Council.”
Chris has lived in the Chadsmoor area since the age of three, her family having moved here when the mines closed down in Northumberland. She lives with her chocolate Labrador, Zara, and has a daughter and two grandsons living nearby. She trained as a hairdresser and also worked as an assistant to the former MP for Cannock Chase, Tony Wright. During this time she gained experience in helping residents with many issues from housing problems to planning and developments in the area. She enjoys meeting people and is a member of a number of local societies and organisations in the Chadsmoor area, including Chadsmoor Chat, Spectrum and Chadsmoor History Society to name a few.
In her role in the Cabinet as Culture and Leisure Portfolio Holder, Chris is responsible for parks and cemeteries. Cannock Cemetery is closed to new burials and the Labour Council carried out an extensive search, overseen by Chris, to find a suitable site for a new cemetery. Work has started and she is proud that a new facility, including a crematorium, will be open later this year.
The pandemic has had a devastating impact on leisure services up and down the country, and just like other areas, our facilities have been forced to close during lockdowns, and lose income. Chris has lobbied hard to ensure that our leisure services are supported with council money through this crisis because she knows how important they are to our residents.
Chris believes everyone should have the right to decent housing and was heavily involved in the transformation of the Moss Road estate in Chadsmoor. Plans were drawn up to replace the out of date and unsuitable flats and houses with a new estate. It now has top class housing with open spaces and play areas for residents to enjoy.
As part of the Labour Council’s commitment to environmentally friendly and affordable council housing, a new estate is being built on the old Council Depot site in Chadsmoor. This will provide houses for both rent and sale and plans are being drawn up for even more green council housing to be built in Chadsmoor. Watch this space!
Many residents are concerned about the Tory County Council plans to charge for parking on The Chase. Local residents views were ignored when these plans were passed by the Conservatives and if elected, Chris will ensure that our voices are heard.
Please vote for Christine Mitchell for County and District on May 6th.
