Vice Chair – Membership
What is the role?
When you join the Labour Party, your Membership Officer (a role which in some CLPs is called Vice Chair – Membership or VCM for short) might well be the first person you hear from in your local party. Membership Officers lead on membership engagement and retention, as well as the administration around membership. They work to make sure that their local party continues to grow and remains vibrant, diverse and inclusive. Often they’ll be responsible for encouraging people to join, making sure new members are welcomed, and sometimes reminding long standing members that they need to renew their membership!
What are they responsible for?
The role of Membership Officer is really exciting and varied – especially with our membership having grown so much in the past few years. Membership Officers ensure that members are at the heart of all activity, ensuring every local Labour Party is a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone. This can involve encouraging members to attend meetings, get involved with campaigning and take action on issues that matter to them. They ensure that everyone is equipped with the skills and information they need to do this, and answer any questions people have about membership and activism.
Membership Officers also work hard to ensure that members are fully up to date with their membership payments, and lead on membership recruitment.
How do I get in touch?
Of course you don’t need to be a Membership Officer to help with member engagement in your local party, and everyone has something distinct to offer that could be helpful and interesting for new members. Get in touch with your Local Contact using your MyLabour account if you’re interested in volunteering to welcome new members or help with recruitment. Every CLP has seen an increase in their membership over the last few years, so your Membership Officer will be glad of the help!
